What Is E10 Petrol?
E10 is the standard unleaded petrol sold at UK filling stations. It contains up to 10% renewable bioethanol. The average price today is 156.7p per litre across 2,461 stations.
E10 Explained
E10 petrol is a blend of 90% regular unleaded petrol and up to 10% bioethanol — a renewable alcohol made from crops such as sugar beet, wheat, and waste wood. The UK switched from E5 (5% ethanol) to E10 as the standard grade in September 2021, following similar moves across Europe.
The primary purpose of E10 is to reduce CO₂ emissions from road transport. The Department for Transport estimates that E10 cuts transport CO₂ emissions by around 750,000 tonnes per year — equivalent to removing 350,000 cars from the road.
E10 vs E5 — What's the Difference?
| E10 (Unleaded) | E5 (Super Unleaded) | |
|---|---|---|
| Ethanol content | Up to 10% | Up to 5% |
| Average price | 156.7p | 173.7p |
| Octane rating | 95 RON | 97–99 RON |
| Fuel economy impact | Baseline | ~1–2% better |
| Compatibility | Most cars from 2011+ | All petrol cars |
E10 is currently 16.9p per litre cheaper than E5 on average. For most drivers, the small economy loss from E10 is far outweighed by the lower price at the pump.
Is My Car E10 Compatible?
The vast majority of petrol cars on UK roads are E10 compatible. As a general rule:
- Cars from 2011 onwards — almost certainly compatible
- Cars from 2000–2010 — most are compatible, but check your manufacturer
- Cars before 2000 — less likely to be compatible
- Classic and vintage cars — generally not compatible
If your car isn't E10 compatible, you should use E5 super unleaded instead. You can check your vehicle's compatibility on the government's E10 checker.
E10 and Fuel Economy
Ethanol contains less energy per litre than pure petrol. Because E10 has double the ethanol of E5, you may see a 1–2% reduction in fuel economy. In real-world terms, that's roughly:
- About 3–6 fewer miles per tank on a typical 55-litre fill
- Around £1–2 extra per tank in fuel costs
- Barely noticeable in everyday driving
For most drivers, the price saving of E10 over E5 more than compensates for the marginal economy loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does E10 mean?
E10 stands for petrol blended with up to 10% bioethanol. The 'E' is for ethanol and '10' represents the maximum percentage. It replaced E5 as the standard UK unleaded grade in September 2021.
Is my car compatible with E10?
Almost all petrol cars manufactured after 2011 are E10 compatible. Most cars from 2000 onwards are also fine. You can check on the government's online tool at gov.uk/check-vehicle-e10-petrol. If your car isn't compatible, use E5 super unleaded instead.
Is E10 cheaper than E5?
Yes. E10 is typically 16.9p per litre cheaper than E5 super unleaded. The average E10 price right now is 156.7p, while E5 averages 173.7p.
Does E10 give worse fuel economy?
E10 contains slightly less energy per litre than E5, which can reduce fuel economy by around 1–2%. For most drivers this translates to roughly £1–2 extra per tank — far less than the price difference between E10 and E5.
Can E10 damage my engine?
In compatible vehicles, E10 is perfectly safe. In older or incompatible cars, the higher ethanol content can corrode certain rubber and metal components in the fuel system over time. If in doubt, use E5 super unleaded.
What is the cheapest E10 in the UK today?
The cheapest E10 unleaded right now is 123.5p per litre at TEST, BUPA DENTAL CARE, 1, STATION ROAD, WARMINSTER, BA12 9BR, WARMINSTER. The UK average is 156.7p.
